FOCAL returns to Scotland in October 2023 as event host extraordinaire James Robinson takes us north of the border…

After a successful 2022 event, FOCAL is returning to the Scottish capital in 2023 with host James Robinson running the show again.

The event will take place at the Carlton Bridge Club, around a mile north of the city centre. The 8, 9, 23, and 27 buses all take you within walking distance of the venue, which is next to the Goldenacre Bowling Club.  Doors open from 9:45 for an 10:45 start.

There are some nice guesthouses local to the venue, and of course a great range of hotels to choose from in central Edinburgh. The venue is also quite close to the beautiful Royal Botanic Garden, well worth a visit if you have some extra time on the event weekend.

Lunch

There is food and drink available at the venue, including soups and sandwiches for lunch, as well as cakes, and a variety of drinks from tea/coffee to soft drinks, as well as alcoholic ones.

The venue is cashless, so try not to bring any coins/notes, except for the lunchtime quiz.

We also intend on having an evening meal after the event but that is still to be sorted out, although the popularity of COSMO last year suggests that we’ll try and go there again this year.

Format
We will use the three-to-a-table format, originally invented by the Edinburgh Countdown Club in the 1980s and latterly adopted as the Lincoln format. Everyone plays six 9-round games over the course of the day, and hosts another three on their tables. After six games, the top two players will be invited to contest a Grand Final to decide an overall winner.
